Pre and Post Treatment Guidelines​

 To ensure the safest and most effective treatment, please follow these steps before your appointment:

7–10 DAYS BEFORE

  • Avoid other treatments in the treatment area:

    • Chemical peels

    • Laser treatments

    • Waxing, threading, or electrolysis

  • Ensure skin is free of open wounds, infections, or active breakouts


48 HOURS BEFORE

  • Avoid blood thinners and anti-inflammatory medications unless prescribed:

    • No aspirin

    • No ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin)

    • No naproxen

  • If you are on prescribed blood thinners, consult your physician before treatment

  • Avoid alcohol


3–5 DAYS BEFORE

  • Discontinue active skincare including:

    • Retinol/retinoids

    • AHA/BHA acids (glycolic, lactic, salicylic)

    • Benzoyl peroxide

    • Vitamin C if your skin is sensitive

  • Avoid harsh scrubs, exfoliants, or resurfacing tools


72 HOURS BEFORE

  • Cleanse with a gentle, non-active cleanser

  • Use clean hands only; avoid powered cleansing brushes (such as Clarisonic) for 1 week

  • Avoid direct sun exposure; wear broad-spectrum SPF 30+ daily


OTHER IMPORTANT NOTES

Please notify your provider if:

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding

  • You have a history of cold sores (an antiviral may be recommended)

  • You have taken Accutane (isotretinoin) within the past 6 months

  • You have autoimmune conditions, recent cosmetic procedures, or new medications

  • You have had significant sun exposure or a sunburn in the past week


Drink plenty of water before your appointment to support skin hydration and healing.

Microneedling triggers a controlled healing response. Redness, tightness, warmth, and sensitivity are common for the first 24–48 hours. Follow these steps to support optimal healing and results:

FIRST 24–48 HOURS

  • Avoid strenuous exercise or sweating

  • Avoid hot showers, saunas, steam rooms, and hot tubs

  • No swimming pools or bodies of water

FIRST 72 HOURS

  • Cleanse gently using a mild, non-active cleanser

  • Only touch your skin with clean hands

  • Apply approved healing serums such as peptide serums or post-procedure recovery products recommended by your provider

  • Do not use makeup for 24–72 hours; if you must, use mineral makeup with clean brushes

  • Apply a broad-spectrum mineral SPF 30+ daily once redness subsides

  • Avoid active skincare:

    • Retinol/retinoids

    • AHA/BHA acids

    • Vitamin C

    • Benzoyl peroxide

WHAT TO EXPECT

  • Redness and heat similar to a sunburn

  • Tightness or dryness

  • Mild flaking or peeling — do not pick or exfoliate

  • Skin gradually becomes smoother and more luminous over several days

Results continue to improve for 4–6 weeks as collagen is produced.

TWO TO FOUR WEEKS BEFORE

  • Avoid direct sun exposure, tanning beds, and self-tanners on the treatment area for 2–4 weeks.

  • Apply broad-spectrum SPF 30+ daily to protect the skin and reduce the risk of pigmentation changes.

  • Do not schedule treatment if you have a visible tan or sunburn.

  • Avoid photosensitizing medications (doxycycline, minocycline, St. John’s Wort) for 7 days, if approved by your prescriber.

  • If you have a history of cold sores (herpes simplex) near the treatment area, notify your provider — a preventive antiviral may be recommended.

  • Notify your provider if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning pregnancy.


FIVE TO SEVEN DAYS BEFORE

  • Discontinue retinoids, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, or other exfoliating or irritating skincare products on the treatment area.

  • Avoid physical exfoliation such as scrubs, loofahs, or dry brushing.

  • Avoid aspirin several days prior (if approved by your prescriber) to help minimize bruising risk.


TWO TO THREE DAYS BEFORE

  • Keep the treatment area clean, moisturized, and protected from sun exposure.

  • Avoid alcohol for 2–3 days before treatment.


TWENTY-FOUR HOURS BEFORE

  • Arrive with clean, product-free skin — no makeup, lotion, perfume, deodorant, or oils.

  • Notify your provider of any recent illness, new medications, or changes in your skin.

  • This is normal — do not pick at flaking or peeling skin.


TREATED VASCULAR LESIONS — WHAT TO EXPECT

  • Treated vessels may appear darker, purplish, or bruised before they begin to fade.

  • Temporary redness or swelling is normal.


ONGOING FOR TWO WEEKS

  • Continue avoiding sun exposure and apply broad-spectrum SPF 30+ daily for 4 weeks.

  • Avoid self-tanner, bronzer, and spray tans until all redness and sensitivity have resolved.

  • Avoid chemical or physical exfoliation until the skin is fully calm (typically 5–7 days).

  • Keep the area moisturized with a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer.


EXPECTED RESULTS

  • Improvement occurs gradually over several sessions.

  • Pigmented spots will darken, then flake naturally.

  • Vascular lesions may lighten or fade over several days to weeks.

  • Most patients require 3–6 sessions, spaced 4–6 weeks apart, depending on the concern.

To ensure the best results and minimize the risk of product migration, please follow these guidelines after your treatment:


IMMEDIATELY AFTER TREATMENT

  • Remain upright for 4 hours — avoid lying down or bending forward excessively.

  • Avoid rubbing, touching, or massaging the treated areas for the rest of the day.

  • Avoid hats, tight headbands, or anything that applies pressure to the forehead.

  • You may gently cleanse your face with clean hands.


MAKEUP & SKINCARE

  • Avoid applying makeup for 1 hour, except for Jane Iredale mineral cosmetics, which may be applied immediately if needed.

  • Avoid facials, facial massage, dermaplaning, microdermabrasion, or laser treatments for 2 weeks.

  • Resume your normal skincare routine tomorrow, avoiding exfoliation for 24 hours.


EXERCISE & ACTIVITY

  • Avoid strenuous exercise, hot yoga, steam rooms, saunas, and excessive heat for the rest of the day.

  • Normal daily activity may resume tomorrow.


WHAT TO EXPECT

  • Small bumps or redness at injection sites are normal and usually fade within 10–20 minutes.

  • Mild tenderness or a slight headache can occur — acetaminophen may be used if needed.

  • Dysport® results may begin around day 2–3, with full effect by day 5.

  • Botox® results typically begin around day 3–5, with full effect between 10–14 days.

  • A two-week follow-up may be recommended for refinement, if needed.


HOW LONG RESULTS LAST

  • Botox® and Dysport® generally last 3–4 months, though duration varies based on metabolism, dose, and treatment area.

  • Consistent treatments help maintain smoother, refreshed results over time.

IMMEDIATELY AFTER TREATMENT

  • You may resume normal daily activity right away.

  • Avoid strenuous exercise, hot yoga, steam rooms, and saunas for 24–48 hours.

  • Avoid alcohol and salty foods the day of treatment, as these can increase swelling.

  • Apply a cool compress (not ice directly on the skin) to reduce swelling or tenderness.

  • Avoid massaging or applying pressure to treated areas unless instructed by your provider.

  • Avoid tight hats, goggles, or anything that compresses the treatment area.


MAKEUP & SKINCARE

  • Jane Iredale mineral cosmetics may be applied immediately after treatment if desired.

  • All other makeup should be avoided for 4 hours and applied only with clean brushes and tools.

  • Avoid retinoids, AHAs/BHAs, exfoliants, and strong active skincare for 24–48 hours.

  • Use gentle cleansing and moisturizing products to support skin recovery.


WHAT TO EXPECT

  • Swelling, firmness, tenderness, and mild asymmetry are common for 3–7 days.

  • Bruising can occur and may take 10–14 days to fully resolve.

  • Small lumps or firmness early on are normal as filler settles.

  • Results are immediate, but full integration may take up to 4 weeks.

  • You will receive a follow-up call or text the day after treatment.

  • A refinement appointment may be scheduled at 4 weeks if needed.


LONGEVITY

JUVÉDERM® and Restylane® fillers typically last:

  • 6–12 months in high-movement areas (lips, smile lines).

  • 12–18 months in structural areas (cheeks, chin, jawline).

  • Up to 24 months for certain robust formulas and placement areas.

Longevity varies based on product used, metabolism, area treated, and lifestyle.


IMPORTANT PRECAUTIONS

  • Avoid dental procedures (cleanings, whitening, injections) for 2 weeks.

  • Sleep on your back with your head elevated the first night if possible.

  • Avoid tanning beds, saunas, steam rooms, and intense heat for 48 hours.

  • Avoid facial treatments (lasers, microneedling, peels, facials, dermaplaning) for 2 weeks.


WHEN TO SEEK IMMEDIATE HELP
